Grooming Guidelines For Your Australian Labradoodle Puppy!

Australian Labradoodles are low-shedding and allergy-friendly, but they do require regular grooming to maintain their beautiful coats. Without proper instructions, many groomers may cut your Labradoodle to look like a poodle or schnauzer. To keep your dog’s unique look, it’s important to follow these grooming guidelines or share them with your groomer.

Brushing Your Labradoodle

Begin brushing your puppy from the first week at home. Use a slicker brush and a de-matting comb to work through the coat from head to tail at least 3–4 times a week. This not only prevents matting but also gets your dog used to being handled. Rounded-tip scissors are helpful for trimming around the eyes between grooming appointments.

Baby Coat vs. Adult Coat

Your Labradoodle’s soft puppy coat will begin transitioning to an adult coat between 8 and 12 months of age. During this phase, more frequent brushing is essential, as matting can occur easily. This is also a good time for your puppy’s first full-body trim to manage the length and keep the coat healthy.

Shedding and Coat Maintenance

Labradoodles don’t shed like traditional dogs, but a minor coat “blow” can happen during the transition from puppy to adult coat—usually around 12–14 months. Once the adult coat is fully in, regular brushing and grooming every 6–8 weeks will keep it looking its best.

With consistent care, your Australian Labradoodle will stay clean, mat-free, and looking great year-round. For the best results, choose a groomer familiar with Labradoodle grooming standards.
